I was no stranger to working out when I joined the Formula Complete Fitness Family in mid-June of 2019. I had been a founding member at another facility and was in the habit of attending three one hour HIIT classes and running the other four days of the week. With Formula, I found my routine with Equilibrium on Mondays and Wednesdays, Flex on Sundays and finally adding Friday Focus a few weeks prior to the Women’s Four Miler. It was during the Women’s Four Miler that I greatly improved my previous best time. I cut 5 minutes from my chip time from my 2018 results. A few weeks later I ran the Wicked 10K at Virginia Beach where I chopped 7 minutes and 49 seconds off of my time from my 2018 race.
I attribute these gains to the running-specific strength exercises in both Equilibrium and Flex along with the tempo, hill, and interval training I picked up in Focus. I also worked with Ann to develop a custom training plan with specific paces for both Tuesday Track Workouts and Saturday Long Runs with pace-specific work built in. Outside of the physical gains, the mantras and philosophy worked into the instructor-led classes helped me through my tough workouts and race efforts. Quotes like…..”Get comfortable being uncomfortable”; “Your legs follow your arms”; and “Focus on what you can control – like your breathing, your attitude”.
